My book project -- provisionally titled The Welfare Workforce and under contract with Cambridge University Press-- shows how public sector trade unions shape the welfare state.

I demonstrate this relationship by examining the political economy of mental health care, with cross-national statistics and comparative-historical analyses of the American, French, Swedish, and Norwegian cases.

In its dissertation form, the project earned awards from the National Academy of Social Insurance,  the American Political Science Association French Politics Group/Association Française de Science Politique, and the American Sociological Association's Section on Comparative-Historical Sociology.
